The raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, was conducted legally, according to Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai. In a statement made on March 20, Sai confirmed that the necessary warrants had been obtained before the search was carried out.
“We take responsibility for the search that occurred. Let it be clear that the searches, and the manner in which they were executed, were in strict accordance with the law. Warrants were obtained and followed,” Sai told reporters in Accra.
The raid comes amid ongoing investigations into former officials of the previous government, an issue that has sparked public debate. Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim, addressing the issue before the Justice Minister’s comments, emphasized that there should be no objection if due process is followed in the search and arrest of individuals linked to the former administration.
“I am yet to receive a full briefing, but I can confirm that there are ongoing investigations involving individuals of interest who may be invited to assist with the process,” Muslim said. She defended the actions, asserting that visiting the homes of such individuals was a legitimate means of gathering information.
However, the search of Addison’s home and the arrest of Okatakyie, a former executive, drew criticism from opposition figures. Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin and other members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemned the raid, raising concerns over respect for democratic values and human rights.
Madam Muslim, however, dismissed these criticisms, accusing the Minority of attempting to obstruct accountability and of misrepresenting the government’s actions. She noted that the current administration was more committed to ensuring accountability than the NPP government had been, citing the treatment of NDC officials after the 2017 transition of power.
“The Minority’s reaction seems designed to avoid accountability, exaggerating the situation and deliberately misrepresenting the actions taken by the government,” she asserted.
