Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko has been appointed acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) by President John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement, the NCA described Fianko’s appointment as a historic moment, marking the first time a Director General has been selected from within the organization itself.
Fianko, an electronic communications engineer with over 20 years of experience, has expertise in radio frequency spectrum management, telecom and broadcasting regulation, policy development, and ICT industry research. He has been with the NCA since 2004, initially joining as a National Service Person, and steadily advancing through the ranks. In January 2024, he was confirmed as the Director of the Engineering Division, where he oversaw the management and licensing of telecommunications and broadcasting services in Ghana.
His extensive experience includes serving on several technical and regulatory committees and playing a key role in international telecommunications bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), and the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS).
Fianko’s contributions to Ghana’s communications sector include leading the country’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. He also served as Secretary to the Digital Broadcasting Migration Committee (DBMC) from 2010 to 2016, contributing to the development of digital television standards adopted across the region.
He holds degrees in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications Management, and Applied Business Leadership. Fianko is also a Minister in the Methodist Church Ghana and an advocate for digital innovation.
He succeeds Dr. Joe Anokye as Acting Director General and is expected to drive the next phase of growth and technological advancement in Ghana’s communications sector.
