President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Ghana, as Chairman of the newly formed Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service, in a move aimed at strengthening oversight and strategic leadership at the nation’s border agency.
The appointment was formally announced during an inauguration ceremony held Wednesday at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra. The event was presided over by Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
Rev. Dr. Wengam, elected General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God in 2022, brings public sector experience to the role, having previously chaired the Ghana Prisons Service Council. During his tenure there, he oversaw notable reform efforts including the “Project Efiase” prison infrastructure initiative.
The newly constituted council is tasked with guiding the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) as it navigates the evolving demands of border security, migration governance, and national development.
Rev. Wengam holds a degree in Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Ghana, a Master’s in Theology
