Rune Skinnebach has formally taken up his post as the new European Union Ambassador to Ghana, following a credentials ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday.

The Danish diplomat presented his Letters of Credence to President John Dramani Mahama, marking the official start of his four-year mandate in the West African country.

Ahead of the ceremony with President Mahama, Ambassador Skinnebach also presented his Open Letters to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In remarks following his meeting with the president, Mr Skinnebach underscored the importance of the EU-Ghana relationship, describing Ghana as a “preferred trading partner” and pledging to strengthen cooperation in areas such as youth development, education, sustainability, and security.

“I look forward to further strengthening Ghana-EU relations during my tenure,” he said. “We commit ourselves as a partner to Ghana’s future… and I will work to establish the EU as Ghana’s primary security and political partner.”

President Mahama and Ambassador Skinnebach reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening the long-standing partnership between the EU and Ghana, which spans trade, governance, and development cooperation.

Ambassador Skinnebach brings over two decades of diplomatic experience within the EU’s external relations system. Prior to his appointment in Ghana, he served as EU Ambassador to Malawi, Deputy Head of Division for Pan-African Affairs at the European External Action Service in Brussels, and held senior roles in Zambia.
