The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has adjourned sitting indefinitely following a dispute over vacant seats. The controversy arose when National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs occupied the Majority side of the chamber after New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs walked out, claiming to be the majority.

NPP MPs, led by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, exited the chamber to avoid confrontation, urging peaceful resolution through the courts.

During the brief sitting, the Speaker acknowledged the presence of enough members to conduct business but not to make decisions. He also addressed a request from Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu to correct records from the previous session, where the NPP had been recorded as the majority.

The Speaker further mentioned receiving court documents regarding the recent Supreme Court ruling that paused his earlier declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. The Court’s stay of execution allows the four MPs—three from the NPP and one from the NDC—to continue their duties until a final ruling is made.
