Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has clarified that he does not play a role in determining which party holds the majority or minority in the House. According to him, this decision rests solely on the numbers each party commands among Members of Parliament (MPs).
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 6 November, Speaker Bagbin stated, “It is not the function or the duty of the Speaker; it is for MPs to decide. It is a question of numbers.”
Addressing recent controversies surrounding the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, Mr Bagbin underscored that democratic principles require adherence to the rule of law and that legal processes should be allowed to proceed without interference.
