Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has lifted the suspension of four Members of Parliament following a joint appeal from both the Majority and Minority caucuses.
The suspension was originally imposed after a chaotic incident during the vetting of ministerial nominees, which led the Speaker to take disciplinary action. However, after a plea from both sides of the House, Bagbin decided to reverse his decision.
Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin said, “They demonstrated and assured me of their total support to me and the deputy speakers to ensure that we have an efficient and effective function in parliament.” He added that, based on the statements and conduct of the MPs involved, he was satisfied enough to lift the suspension.
The call for the suspension to be lifted came from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in Parliament. Afenyo-Markin, taking responsibility for the disruptions, urged the Speaker to reconsider the suspension and restore harmony in the House.
The incident, which had involved heated exchanges and disturbances, led to the establishment of a special committee to investigate the matter. In addition to the two chief Whips, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (Minority) and Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Majority), MPs Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib were also suspended.
This reversal of the suspension aims to restore order and foster constructive dialogue in the legislative process.
