President John Dramani Mahama used his Eid al-Adha address on Wednesday to urge Ghana’s youth to reject drug abuse and embrace discipline, education and entrepreneurship, framing the appeal as critical to the country’s social stability and economic future.

Speaking at Independence Square in Accra, Mr. Mahama said young people must resist influences that could undermine their ambitions and derail national development. He called on the youth to remain “disciplined, law-abiding, respectful and responsible citizens,” while warning against drug addiction.

“Our nation needs young people who are focused on education, skills, hard work, entrepreneurship and service to humanity,” he said.
The president also used the occasion to praise Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, describing him as a symbol of humility, tolerance and peaceful coexistence whose example transcends religious and political divisions.

Mr. Mahama said the cleric’s long-standing commitment to peacebuilding and compassion offered lessons for the country, particularly for younger generations navigating mounting social and economic pressures.

“We are blessed to have the enduring example of our revered National Chief Imam,” the president said, urging Ghanaians to emulate the imam’s values of simplicity, tolerance and service.
