Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a sensational second-half turnaround to defeat host nation Morocco 3–2, clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
With the passionate home crowd behind them, Morocco raced to a 2–0 lead in the first half. Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 13th minute, before Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the advantage in the 24th minute with a clinical finish in the box.
The Super Falcons appeared stunned at halftime as the Atlas Lionesses seemed firmly in control.
Nigeria refused to surrender. Momentum shifted in the 68th minute when Esther Okoronkwo scored from the penalty spot after a foul in the box— a composed finish to give Nigeria hope.
The pressure then brought an equaliser from a superb cross deep into the box, which found its way into the net to level matters. With energy rising and Moroccans unnerved, Nigeria sensed the moment.
In stoppage time, substitute Jennifer Echegini rose to nod in the winner from a corner, completing one of WAFCON’s most remarkable comebacks and sending Falcons fans into jubilation.
With the title secured, Nigeria also booked automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Morocco, despite the heartbreak, earned respect and admiration as a rising force in African women’s football.
