The Techiman Traditional Council has dismissed claims of hostility between the people of Techiman and the Asantehene, following an incident involving the alleged attack on his convoy during his visit to the Bono East Region.
In a statement issued on December 3, the Council emphasized that there is no animosity between the two groups, underscoring their shared heritage and mutual respect. The clarification came after some unidentified youths threw stones at the convoy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on December 2, while it was passing through Techiman. The incident, which raised concerns nationwide, occurred as the Asantehene’s convoy was returning to Kumasi after attending a funeral in Nkoranza.
A preliminary police report indicated that the stones were thrown by youths believed to be from Techiman. The Council explained that any tensions were likely fueled by unverified social media posts, which included allegations that security personnel in the convoy had fired gunshots and mistreated civilians, further angering the youth.
The Council reiterated that the Asantehene and the Techimanhene share strong familial ties as members of the Oyoko Clan, and have long maintained a positive relationship. It also highlighted that swift action by security forces helped restore peace, with those injured receiving treatment at the Holy Family Teaching Hospital.
The Techiman Traditional Council called for unity and urged the public, especially the youth, to engage in activities that promote development. It also cautioned against the misuse of social media, stressing the importance of respecting traditional authorities and maintaining national peace.
