Six people, including a toddler, have been injured by stray bullets in the town of Kwabenakwa in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, following celebratory gunfire linked to a chieftaincy dispute.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday, shortly after a court ruling favoured one faction in the long-running dispute. According to eyewitnesses, a man identified as Kofi Cole, believed to be aligned with the victorious side, fired shots while celebrating with relatives in a tricycle.
Stray bullets struck six people nearby, prompting panic among residents.
Four of the victims were treated and discharged from hospital. However, a mother and her young child sustained more serious injuries and have been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.
Police say the suspect fled the scene and is currently on the run. A search is underway.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over violence associated with traditional leadership disputes in parts of Ghana.
