Dr. Tony Aidoo, a senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Ghanaian Ambassador to the Netherlands, has criticised Minority Leader and MP for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over what he described as a contradiction between Afenyo-Markin’s self-perception of being gentle and his aggressive actions.
Speaking during a discussion on recent parliamentary events, particularly the vetting of ministerial nominees at the Appointments Committee, Dr. Aidoo suggested that Afenyo-Markin was displaying symptoms of cognitive dissonance, a psychological concept in which conflicting beliefs or behaviours cause discomfort.
“Afenyo-Markin’s behaviour, excuse me to say, he is having a very tough case of cognitive dissonance,” Dr. Aidoo remarked. “Cognitive dissonance, in socio-psychological terms, occurs when your cognitive elements conflict, and you are compelled to restore balance by either eliminating or devaluing one of the conflicting elements. That is what Afenyo-Markin has been doing.”
Dr. Aidoo further characterised Afenyo-Markin’s conduct during parliamentary proceedings as reflective of the wider behaviour of politicians from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
