The Ghanaian Ministry of Transport has established a 13-member inter-agency committee to review the ban on the use of motorcycles, or ‘okadas’, for commercial purposes. The committee’s main task will be to assess the relevant section of the Road Traffic Regulations 2021 (L.I. 2180) that prohibits such use.

Speaking after the committee’s inauguration on Tuesday, March 18, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the committee is expected to complete its work within three weeks. The government is considering legalising the use of motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes, a move aimed at providing economic opportunities for young people in Ghana.

“We are committed to allowing motorcycles and tricycles to be used for commercial activities. This review will involve consultations with various stakeholders to gather ideas and recommendations to amend L.I. 2180,” said Mr. Bukari Nikpe. The review comes as part of broader efforts by the government to support the livelihoods of those reliant on the motorcycle industry.
