Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the Trede Hospital, part of the government’s Agenda 111 healthcare initiative, remains unfinished and non-operational, despite being officially commissioned just days before the 2024 general election.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Akandoh explained that the government requires GHS 100 million to complete and fully operationalize the facility, which is located in the Atwima Kwawonma Municipality in the Ashanti Region.
“We have come to inspect the Trede Agenda 111 hospital, and as you can see, the place is still under construction. I have been informed that the outstanding commitment is over GHS 100 million,” he said. “So, completion is one issue, operationalization is another, and even paying for work already done is also a challenge.”
The Trede Hospital was originally commissioned by former President Nana Akufo-Addo on December 5, 2024, as the first completed facility under the Agenda 111 initiative, a project aimed at building 111 district and specialized hospitals to improve healthcare access across the country.
However, despite the commissioning, the facility remains incomplete and non-functional, raising concerns about the progress of the broader Agenda 111 programme.
During a recent meeting with the Christian Council, President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that only one hospital under the Agenda 111 initiative has been fully completed. He also stated that the government needs $1.7 billion to finish the remaining projects.
The delays in completing these hospitals have become a growing issue within Ghana’s healthcare sector, with calls for immediate action to ensure the full realization of Agenda 111.
