The headquarters of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Kanda, Accra, was attacked on Monday morning by a group of unidentified individuals, believed to be supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A staff member, who spoke to Joy News, described the situation as chaotic, stating that the attackers arrived at the complex demanding the staff vacate the premises. “The place has been besieged by thugs. I don’t know where they are coming from. They are harassing everyone,” the employee said.

The staff member further claimed that such attacks on NADMO are not uncommon when there is a change in government, adding, “Every time there’s a change in power, NADMO officers are targeted for no reason.”

The eyewitness, who had taken refuge in one of the offices, also reported that the attackers were demanding the keys to the facility. “I had to hide to call you. They have taken over the frontage of our office, and there are quite a number of them,” the staff member said.

Joy News’ Collins Frimpong, who later visited the scene, confirmed that a photograph of President Akufo-Addo and other officials was damaged by the youth at the reception area. However, the attackers were unable to access the main offices and cause further damage.

It is not unusual in Ghana for supporters of political parties to seize public offices when there is a change in leadership following a general election.
