The committee investigating the disruptions during the vetting session on January 30, 2025, has suspended its proceedings until further notice. The decision follows instructions from the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

Committee Chairman Emmanuel Bedzrah announced the suspension, explaining that the Clerk had directed that sessions be paused until the Speaker of Parliament provides additional guidance on the next steps.

“We’ve received instructions from the Clerk of Parliament, and I want to make it clear that it is not the committee’s decision to halt the sessions, but a directive from the Clerk,” Bedzrah said. “We will await further instructions from the Speaker.”

The committee was in session when the directive was issued. The suspension follows the chaotic scenes on January 30, when a standoff between the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament over the vetting of nominees Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa led to a physical altercation. The clash resulted in the destruction of tables and microphones, prompting the suspension of four MPs.

In the aftermath of the disruptions, the Minority walked out of the session, leaving the Majority to continue vetting Ablakwa and other nominees on January 31. The violence had occurred after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin had already subjected Ablakwa to a prolonged round of questioning.

The committee, established by Speaker Alban Bagbin, is tasked with investigating the events of January 30. The panel, chaired by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, includes six other MPs and has been given a 10-day deadline to report its findings and recommendations.

To gather public input, the committee has also set up a WhatsApp platform for information submissions.
