Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), taking over from Dr. Da Costa Aboagye.
Dr. Bampoe, a seasoned physician and public health expert, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as Deputy Minister of Health and held leadership positions in international health organizations, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
With a background in global healthcare policy, Dr. Bampoe is poised to lead the NHIA at a critical juncture, as the Authority seeks to expand the coverage and efficiency of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). His appointment aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) health manifesto, which focuses on expanding universal health coverage, enhancing healthcare financing, and ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS.
Dr. Bampoe emphasized the need to uncap the NHIS levy to improve access to healthcare and raise service delivery standards. He also highlighted the importance of innovating in the face of global funding cuts to vital health programs, including HIV prevention.
With his extensive experience in securing international health funding and his strategic leadership, Dr. Bampoe is well-positioned to drive the NHIA’s next phase of growth and strengthen Ghana’s health insurance framework.
