Six people, including Agya Amoh, the head of the Gomoa Obuasi Asona Royal Family, have been left critically injured following an assault by local youth on the Chief of Gomoa Obuasi’s palace. The attack, which involved stone-throwing and the vandalism of two vehicles, occurred on Sunday, February 23, in the farming community of Gomoa Obuasi, located in the central region.

The violence is the latest chapter in a long-running chieftaincy dispute that has divided the community for the past five years. Despite efforts by the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council to install a new chief, tensions remain high. The newly installed chief, Nana Mbir Asomako IX, and his elders were holding a family meeting at the palace when a group of youth, reportedly loyal to a rival claimant to the stool, began hurling stones at the group. The attack lasted over three hours, resulting in multiple injuries and property damage.

According to police sources, the dispute stems from the appointment of Kwabena Atta as caretaker chief after the death of the previous chief. However, following the installation of Nana Mbir Asomako as the new chief, the caretaker failed to relinquish control, triggering the conflict. The group of youth involved in the attack also vandalized the palace and set fire to the vehicles of the newly installed chief.

Nana Mbir Asomako, speaking to local media, described how the youth not only pelted stones but also doused the palace with petrol, attempting to set it ablaze. He and his elders were forced to flee to the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command for safety.

The chief has called for heightened security in the area, urging the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action to prevent further violence. Gomoa Obuasi, with a population of over 7,000, remains at the center of a volatile chieftaincy struggle that threatens to further destabilize the community.
