The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reiterated his side’s disapproval of the nomination of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as the Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs.
Afenyo-Markin cited Ablakwa’s failure to provide all the required documentation regarding his assets and earnings, which had been requested by the Parliamentary Committee. He emphasized that the nominee had only submitted two out of the nine documents needed for review.
“A person seeking equity must come with equity,” Afenyo-Markin said, pointing out that Ablakwa has previously demanded transparency from public figures and political leaders regarding their finances. “If you hold others to account, you must be willing to do the same when scrutinized,” he added.
The North Tongu MP is known for his relentless oversight of government officials, particularly exposing what he terms “state capture” under the administration of President Akufo-Addo. One of his notable revelations included the high cost of the former president’s private jet travels, which he contrasted with the availability of the presidential jet.
However, Afenyo-Markin expressed that while the Minority was not seeking to impede Ablakwa’s political career, they could not support his nomination due to what they described as inconsistencies in his conduct. “We wash our hands off his approval,” he stated. “If he repents, we will welcome him, but for now, all the ‘Airport Hills sins’ are his to carry.”
Ablakwa, who has also been vocal in exposing questionable transactions involving state institutions, has yet to respond publicly to the criticisms.
