Ghana’s police chief issued a blunt warning to criminals Tuesday, saying advances in modern policing would make it increasingly difficult for offenders to evade arrest as authorities intensify efforts to curb violent crime and protect mobile-money operators.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno said the Ghana Police Service would sustain its crackdown on criminal activity nationwide, particularly attacks targeting mobile-money agents, a sector that has become increasingly vulnerable to armed robberies.
“We want to sound a strong warning to criminals wherever they are,” Mr. Yohuno said during a ceremony in Accra where the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana honored him for his anti-crime efforts. “They can run, but they cannot hide.”
The police chief urged offenders to abandon criminal activity, saying law-enforcement agencies were deploying more sophisticated policing methods to track and apprehend suspects.
The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana presented Mr. Yohuno with a plaque and citation in recognition of police operations aimed at improving security for mobile-money vendors and operators.
Mr.Edward Ofori-Agyemang, president of the advocacy group, praised the police leadership for intensifying efforts against criminal networks and called for sustained operations to protect workers in the mobile-money sector.
The remarks come amid growing concerns over attacks on mobile-money agents in Ghana, where the expansion of digital financial services has made vendors frequent targets for theft and armed assaults.
