Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has confirmed the government’s plans to reintroduce a state-of-the-art electronic tolling system aimed at generating revenue for road infrastructure development.
Speaking in Accra on Tuesday during a courtesy call from Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör, Agbodza declared the government’s ambition to create “the best tolling system in Africa.” He emphasised the importance of innovation, vowing that excellence would be the cornerstone of the new system.
“We are not settling for anything less than excellence,” Mr.Agbodza said, reassuring the public that the reintroduction of tolls would be executed with full transparency and efficiency.
The ministry is in the process of securing approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to select a transaction advisor. Mr. Agbodza said the call for proposals would be issued soon, inviting all qualified organisations to submit their technical and financial bids.
“Transparency is a priority, and we want the best proposals to ensure a sustainable and efficient tolling system,” he added. “We will keep the public updated as the process progresses.”
The minister also discussed potential opportunities for Turkish investors to participate in Ghana’s road development under the government’s flagship “Big Push” initiative. He noted that there was potential for technical cooperation between the two countries, particularly in leveraging Turkey’s expertise in modern tolling systems.
“We are eager to collaborate and learn from successful models, particularly those in Turkey, that utilise technology instead of traditional toll booths,” Mr.Agbodza said. “This partnership could lay a strong foundation for a new tolling system that is both efficient and sustainable.”
The launch of the new tolling system is expected to play a key role in funding Ghana’s road infrastructure projects.
