Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer for Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has launched a scathing critique of his political rival, John Mahama, ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Addressing a crowd in the Northern Region on Tuesday, Dr Bawumia accused the former president, now the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of presiding over an era of stagnation and resource shortages in the education sector.
He highlighted reports of chalk shortages in schools during Mr Mahama’s administration and contrasted this with what he described as the NPP’s strides in education.
“In his time, there was no chalk in schools,” Dr Bawumia said. “We are buying tablets for schoolchildren. Every child will get one. No one will be left out. We are even buying laptops for teachers, from Kindergarten to Senior High School.”
Dr Bawumia framed these technological investments as evidence of the NPP’s commitment to modernisation and innovation in education. He argued that the upcoming election represents a choice between “stagnation and forward-thinking development,” urging Ghanaians to opt for a future centred on technology and progress.
He also presented the NPP’s vision for sustainable growth and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver transformation for the country.
“This election is about who can deliver the transformation Ghana needs,” he said. “I am confident that I am the better choice for the future of our country.”
The remarks come as both parties ramp up their campaigns ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested election.
