Inusah Fuseini, the former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, has accused Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) of leading the country into a constitutional crisis over its handling of disputed parliamentary election results.
Speaking on Joy News on December 28, 2024, Fuseini criticized the EC for repeatedly altering the election outcomes, describing its actions as highly incompetent and a threat to the nation’s stability.
“The court never ruled on whether the EC has the authority to declare and change results five times,” Fuseini said. “This is a matter of critical importance for our democracy. It is only by God’s grace that Ghanaians have chosen democracy as their form of government.”
Fuseini warned that the EC’s actions could provoke widespread public outrage, adding, “If the EC continues this conduct, it could lead to unrest, and this country could be in flames.”
His remarks come after the re-collation of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, where seven were declared in favour of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) contested the results, taking the case to the Supreme Court.
The Court subsequently quashed the re-collated results in constituencies including Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central, citing violations of the NDC candidates’ right to a fair hearing. However, the ruling did not affect the results in Ahafo Ano North and Nsawam Adoagyiri.
Fuseini also expressed concern over the EC’s haste in re-collating the results, suggesting that the issue could have been handled with greater care. He further criticized the EC for what he described as a conflict of interest, stating, “We are in a constitutional crisis because the EC seems to be acting as an interested party in this case.”
