Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, has voiced grave concerns regarding the escalating security threats within the parliamentary enclave, underscoring the vulnerability of both lawmakers and staff. Speaking during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the Ninth Parliament, Bagbin described the current security situation as “worrying” and called for urgent measures to safeguard the premises.
“The safety of members and staff remains a significant issue,” Bagbin said, emphasizing the increasing number of attacks on parliamentarians and their teams. “We are not safe,” he declared, pointing to instances where individuals have breached the parliamentary grounds with relative ease, putting everyone within at risk.
The Speaker detailed how some unauthorized persons have gained access to the compound, evading capture by scaling the walls and fleeing into nearby forests. “Anytime there is an attempt to apprehend them, they escape,” he added, expressing alarm over the vulnerability of the parliamentary environment.
Bagbin further stressed the critical need to address these security lapses to ensure the proper functioning of Parliament, as ongoing threats hinder lawmakers from performing their duties without fear for their safety. “This is vital for the functioning of parliament,” he said.
In his remarks, Bagbin expressed confidence that the Ninth Board of Parliament would take swift action to resolve these security concerns. He also urged parliamentary leaders to follow up on the matter promptly to implement necessary safeguards.
With tensions rising over the security of the nation’s legislative body, the Speaker’s call for action is expected to prompt urgent discussions on enhancing protection measures within the parliamentary enclave.
