Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reverse what he describes as unfair dismissals of Ghanaians employed under the previous administration, urging greater protection for all citizens.
In a Facebook post on February 19, Bawumia expressed growing concern over recent actions by the government that, in his view, threaten Ghana’s democratic principles and undermine the rights of its citizens. Despite initially vowing to allow the new administration space to settle, Bawumia’s remarks were prompted by what he sees as an alarming trend of dismissals targeting individuals employed under the previous government.
Dr. Bawumia criticized the Mahama administration for taking steps to remove employees hired by the previous government, calling it a paradox that a party that campaigned on the promise of “jobs for all” is now systematically rendering those same citizens jobless.
“It is ironic that a government that promised job creation is now dismissing those who were employed to contribute to the nation’s development,” Bawumia stated, adding that these actions harm not only individuals but the broader economy and social stability.
The former Vice President also voiced concern over the government’s decision to dismiss public service directors, particularly those who were non-political appointees, accusing the administration of targeting individuals based on their political affiliations.
He also highlighted reports suggesting that security personnel, teachers, and nurses appointed during the previous regime might face similar fates.
Dr.Bawumia lamented what he called a growing atmosphere of insecurity in the country, pointing to incidents of violence, including attacks on journalists, military raids on former government officials’ homes, and mob violence against state institutions.
He warned that such actions, which echo the conduct of a military regime, pose a significant threat to the stability of Ghana’s democracy.
“These are troubling times for our democracy,” he said, calling for immediate action to safeguard the nation’s democratic institutions. He urged President Mahama to act as a leader for all Ghanaians, putting a stop to the dismissals and ensuring that all citizens are treated fairly and protected under the law.
Dr.Bawumia concluded by stressing the need to uphold the Constitution, protect state institutions, and advance democracy in Ghana, asserting that the nation must strive to do better in ensuring fairness and justice for all its citizens.
