Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, is calling on Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the alleged takeover of government land at the CMB Abuja Market in central Accra by private developers.

The lawmaker’s remarks follow a protest earlier this week by traders and transport unions operating in the CMB enclave. Demonstrators accused developers of encroaching on property they say belongs to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, displacing numerous vendors and intensifying congestion in the already-bustling commercial district.

“What I would like to do is unequivocally condemn what is happening in this enclave,” Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings told reporters Tuesday. “It is very clear that this land is state land and should not be taken over by private individuals, especially when we are not sure who is giving the permission.”

The Klottey-Korle MP urged the Ministry of Transport—which oversees the Ghana Railway Development Authority—to issue an official statement clarifying the ownership status of the land and outlining any plans for the area. She also called for EOCO to launch a formal probe into what she described as a potential abuse of authority and a threat to livelihoods in the informal economy.

“This is causing a huge uproar in terms of people’s stability,” she said. “A huge part of our informal sector is situated in the CMB Abuja Market Enclave.”

The government has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
