Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, has condemned a brazen armed robbery that unfolded in broad daylight on Saturday, 2 November, at Adabraka Market in Accra.
Four masked, heavily armed men reportedly ambushed a man in a red Toyota Corolla, seizing large sums of cash. Witnesses say the assailants fired multiple gunshots to scatter bystanders before loading sacks of money into their vehicle and fleeing the scene.
Dr. Rawlings expressed deep concern over the violent attack, noting that it is the second such incident in the area in just four months, a worrying pattern with Ghana’s general elections only weeks away.
“Unfortunately, this is the second time within the last four months that something of this nature has happened, and it’s very worrying,” she told reporters at the scene. “The question is, how are people gaining access to these kinds of weapons, and why do they feel emboldened to act in the heart of the city? With elections less than 36 days away, it raises significant concerns for the safety of residents.”
Dr. Rawlings, who also serves as Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Select Committee on Security and Intelligence, urged Ghana’s Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of National Security, and the Ghana Police Service to take swift action to protect citizens amid a troubling rise in armed criminal activity. She highlighted the alarming use of illegal firearms in the country.
“I have spoken with the police upon arriving here, but this is an issue that needs high-level investigation. It goes beyond police action to involve the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of National Security,” she added.
Dr. Rawlings questioned how such weapons are circulating in Ghana and underscored the urgent need for a concerted approach to address the problem. “If you look at the types of weapons these individuals are carrying, it raises serious questions about the control of illegal firearms.”
In her role as a Deputy Ranking Member on the Security and Intelligence Committee, Dr. Rawlings pledged to push for stronger measures to curb the escalating threat. “I intend to certainly pursue this… to see how we can address it,” she assured her constituents.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a manhunt for the robbers, vowing to bring those responsible to justice and restore a sense of security in the community.
