The Ghana Police Service said it has deployed a special team to the community of Gbeniyiri following deadly reprisal attacks between local residents and Fulani herdsmen that left at least five people dead.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the police said the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno ordered the deployment of intelligence officers and investigators to support the regional command and strengthen security in the area.

“The team comprising intelligence officers and investigators are providing support to the regional command to intensify security and bring perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
According to police sources, the violence was triggered by a suspected armed robbery on March 6 in which a local man was killed by individuals believed to be of Fulani extraction. Residents of the community subsequently carried out a reprisal attack that left four Fulani herdsmen dead and five others seriously injured.
The injured are receiving treatment at government hospitals in Wa and Sawla.
Police in Sawla have opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities say calm has largely been restored, though security operations remain ongoing.
Over the weekend, members of the Savannah Regional Security Council held an emergency meeting in Damongo before visiting the affected communities to help stabilize the situation.
Salisu Bi-Awurbi condemned the violence, describing the killings as “unjustifiable, terrible and unacceptable,” and vowed that anyone linked to the attacks would be arrested and prosecuted.
