Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with a commanding 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield, further denting the defending champions’ title hopes.

Jürgen Klopp’s side, fresh from their victory over Champions League holders Real Madrid, were in ruthless form from the start, putting City under constant pressure. The margin of victory was fully deserved as Liverpool’s relentless attacking play overwhelmed City, who have now gone seven matches without a win, including four consecutive league defeats.

The hosts took the lead after 12 minutes, with Mohamed Salah providing a perfect assist for Cody Gakpo to slot home in front of the Kop. Virgil van Dijk had earlier hit the post, while City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, in for the dropped Ederson, was kept busy throughout the first half.

Van Dijk also missed a header when it seemed easier to score, and Liverpool continued to create chances. As City showed signs of a late rally, the home side put the game beyond reach with 12 minutes remaining. Substitute Darwin Nunez capitalised on a mistake from Ruben Dias, and Luis Diaz was fouled in the box by Ortega. Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot, having missed one against Real Madrid earlier in the week.

Liverpool’s victory leaves them 11 points ahead of City, who are struggling to find form this season.
