Joyce Bawah Mogtari: NDC Victory a ‘Repudiation’ of Akufo-Addo, Not Voter Apathy

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has dismissed claims that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) decisive victory in the 2024 elections was the result of voter apathy, describing it instead as a clear “repudiation” of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In the recently concluded election, Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the valid votes, defeating Dr Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%. This victory marks Mahama’s return to the presidency, following his previous term that ended in 2017.

Speaking on Channel One News’ Face to Face on December 10, Mogtari emphasised the magnitude of the NDC’s win, which included a significant margin in the presidential race and a commanding presence in parliament. “Nobody will take this win away from us… We have won by more than 50% of the votes, with 1.7 million more than our rivals, and we completely dominated both the presidential and parliamentary elections. How can that be explained as apathy?” she said.

Mogtari criticised the NPP’s reliance on the Ashanti region, traditionally a stronghold, while pointing to the NDC’s success in securing 13 of the country’s 16 regions. “They believed the Ashanti region would deliver the votes they needed, but we’ve taken 13 regions and even improved our performance in the three we didn’t win,” she said.

She highlighted Mahama’s strong showing in the Ashanti region, where he garnered over 700,000 votes, as evidence of changing voter sentiment. Mogtari also noted the NDC’s near dominance in parliament, winning nearly 190 seats.

“It is a repudiation of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia,” Mogtari concluded, adding, “Even in Bawumia’s own backyard, in the North East, he couldn’t deliver his region. The message is clear.”
