In a bid to tackle ongoing challenges at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Energy Minister-Designate John Abdulai Jinapor has revealed the government’s plans to form a seven-member committee to explore privatization options for the state-owned utility.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, Jinapor outlined that the committee would focus on assessing private-sector involvement to help address ECG’s financial struggles, operational inefficiencies, and mounting debt — issues that have impeded the company’s ability to provide reliable power to Ghanaians.

“We believe there should be private sector participation,” Jinapor said, emphasizing that such involvement could provide the expertise and resources needed to turn around ECG’s performance and improve the country’s electricity supply.

In a commitment to transparency, the Minister-Designate highlighted that the process would be non-partisan, with a focus on selecting experts for the committee. Jinapor also noted that once a framework is developed, the government would use a Request for Proposal (RFP) or competitive tender process to move forward.
