Two scrap metal dealers were killed by a mob in Ntensere, in the Ashanti Region, on Sunday after being accused of attempting to abduct a three-year-old boy, an incident that has heightened tensions and fears among traders in the area.
According to local reports, the episode began when a nine-year-old girl raised an alarm, alleging that one of the men had placed her younger brother in a sack. Residents quickly intervened, but the situation escalated into violence. One of the accused was beaten to death at the scene, while the second fled and was later found at a nearby scrap facility, where he was also killed by a crowd wielding stones and other objects.
Subsequent eyewitness accounts have offered conflicting versions of events. The girl later clarified that her brother was rescued unharmed, raising questions about the accuracy of the initial allegation that triggered the attack.
Godfred Amoah condemned the killings, urging communities to reject vigilante justice and instead rely on lawful processes, warning of broader social consequences.
Leaders of the scrap dealers’ association in the Ashanti Region said the incident has left members fearful for their safety. Abubakar Aminu Champang called for calm and appealed to national authorities—including John Dramani Mahama, Interior Ministry officials, Inspector-General of Police Christian Yahonu, and the judiciary—to ensure accountability and prevent further attacks on traders.
