Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, issued a rare public mea culpa over the weekend, conceding to missteps made by the previous NPP-led administration while appealing to Ghanaians for a second chance.
In remarks delivered during a stop on the NPP’s “Thank You Tour” in the Ahafo Region town of Goaso, Dr. Bawumia adopted a conciliatory tone, distancing himself from the deflection and defensiveness that typically characterize Ghanaian political discourse.
“We recognize that we have made mistakes along the way, and we sincerely ask for your forgiveness,” Dr. Bawumia said to a crowd of supporters and local stakeholders. “This Thank You Tour is not just a celebration; it is also a moment of sober reflection.”
The comments come amid mounting criticism that the former vice president has sought to dissociate himself from the economic and governance challenges that plagued the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo, under whom Bawumia served for two terms.
Acknowledging public dissatisfaction, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the NPP leadership had “listened to your concerns” and would take corrective measures. “We will not make excuses,” he said. “Instead, we pledge to correct our lapses and to deliver even better governance in the future.”
The speech marked a departure from the usual political blame-shifting ahead of Ghana’s tightly contested December 2024 general elections. It also reflected a strategic pivot by the NPP to re-engage voters frustrated by inflation, unemployment, and perceived mismanagement during the party’s tenure.
Ending on a unifying note, Bawumia called for a collective national reset: “Let us move forward together with a renewed sense of purpose. We owe it to every Ghanaian to serve with humility, dedication, and an unrelenting commitment to progress.”
Dr. Bawumia’s candid remarks may signal a recalibration of campaign messaging as the NPP seeks to regain lost ground in an increasingly skeptical electorate.
