The Chief of Nyinahini in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has called for the prosecution of military officers allegedly involved in the killing of a 37-year-old man in the town.

Nana Amanpene Boateng Twum II said those responsible for the death of Kwame Lala must be held accountable under the law, describing the shooting as unjustified.

The chief’s comments come after a violent confrontation between local youth and soldiers led to the fatal shooting of Lala, who was reportedly wearing a military-style camouflage outfit at the time.

“Why should someone be shot for wearing camouflage? He even removed the shirt and said he would go naked if asked to take off the trousers too—yet he was shot,” the chief said during a meeting with Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe and local MP Seth Osei Akoto.

The incident left four others injured. Two of the wounded have since been discharged from hospital.

Police Commander DCOP Cudjoe said investigations are under way and pledged to bring those responsible to justice. “The investigation process has commenced, and those offenders will not go free,” he said, while appealing to residents to remain calm.

The family of the deceased, who leaves behind a wife and eight children, is demanding justice.
