Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, has sharply criticised former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of deflecting blame for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Dr Bawumia, who led the party into the December polls, has recently pointed to external factors, including the controversial National Cathedral project and the rising cost of fuel, as key reasons behind the NPP’s loss. He said the $58 million spent on the unfinished cathedral project significantly eroded public trust.

But Dr Boamah, in a post on social media, dismissed these claims, insisting that the former vice president must take personal responsibility for the party’s economic record.

“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything and everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical for NPP’s economic mess!” he wrote.

Dr Bawumia, who served as head of the government’s Economic Management Team, has faced growing scrutiny over his stewardship of the economy during the NPP administration. Critics argue that high inflation, currency depreciation, and public debt undermined the party’s popularity and ultimately led to its electoral defeat.

The debate over the causes of the NPP’s loss continues to dominate political discourse in Ghana, with senior figures like Dr Boamah openly challenging Dr Bawumia’s account.
