Accra Regional Police Command has issued a strong warning against the use of live ammunition during traditional celebrations marking the lifting of the ban on drumming and noise-making in the Ga State.
The annual event, which takes place today in key traditional areas including Gbese, Blohum, and Abola, is expected to draw large crowds. Traditionally, the occasion is marked by the ceremonial firing of musketry. However, authorities say recent celebrations have seen some revellers, particularly among the youth, resort to using live ammunition—a development the police say poses serious safety risks.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police Command said anyone found discharging live rounds will face arrest and prosecution.
“The use of live ammunition is not only dangerous but also illegal. We urge the public to strictly adhere to the safety protocols and refrain from any such actions,” the statement read.
The Police Command also disclosed it is working in close collaboration with traditional leaders, including the Gbese Mantse, and event organisers to ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration.
“The Command is committed to maintaining peace and security throughout the festivities and urges the public to report any suspicious or unlawful activities by calling the Police emergency numbers 18555 or 112,” the statement added.
Authorities further encouraged the public to cooperate fully with security personnel deployed for the event.
As the celebrations commence, the Command extended its best wishes to the Ga people, highlighting the cultural significance of the occasion.
“The Accra Regional Police Command takes this opportunity to wish the people of the Ga State a peaceful and memorable celebration,” the statement concluded.
