Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak sought to quell speculation that former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is receiving preferential treatment while serving a prison sentence, insisting she remains in state custody under the supervision of the Ghana Prisons Service.
“From the day she came, she has been with us, and she’s with us, and she’s serving her term,” Mr. Muntaka said in an interview with Joy News on Wednesday.
The minister’s remarks follow growing calls from opposition lawmakers for greater transparency regarding the location where Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu is being held after her conviction in a fraud case linked to MASLOC.
Mr. Muntaka rejected suggestions that the government should disclose the exact facility housing the former official, arguing that revealing the whereabouts of high-profile inmates could pose security risks.
“Maybe in Ghana, we take telling people where somebody is serving lightly, because in America and other countries, telling people that this kind of high-profile person is here can even lead to the death of that person,” he said. “So it’s for safety.”
He dismissed claims that Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu is being housed in a private residence or special facility.
“Trust us, she’s serving her term. She’s not in any private residence. She is with us,” he said.
The minister added that the former MASLOC chief executive, having been sentenced by the courts, is serving her punishment within the prison system.
“Was she not sentenced? She was. If she were sentenced, where would she be? You must be in prison custody,” he said.
Mr. Muntaka noted that individuals seeking to verify her status or arrange visits may do so through established procedures administered by the Ghana Prisons Service.
