Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah issued a public apology to the Church of Pentecost following backlash over remarks by Dr. Mavis Awusi concerning the church’s chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.
The controversy arose after Dr. Awusi responded sharply to concerns raised by the church about the environmental impact of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Speaking at the church’s General Council Meeting, Apostle Nyamekye had highlighted the growing ecological damage, noting that polluted rivers have forced some congregations to abandon traditional baptism practices in natural water bodies.
Dr. Awusi’s subsequent comments in a media interview—widely interpreted as a warning directed at the church leader—prompted criticism from the public and religious community.
Mr. Debrah sought to defuse tensions during remarks delivered at a church gathering in Trasacco on Sunday, where he framed the incident as inadvertent and appealed for reconciliation.
He said the comments did not reflect any intent to disrespect the church, describing them as a “slip” and asking members to forgive both Dr. Awusi and the administration. He emphasized shared ties between government officials and the church, signaling an effort to restore cordial relations.
