Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has pledged to conduct a fair, transparent, and credible rerun of the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, amid heightened political tensions and public scrutiny.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Deputy Chairperson Dr. Bossman Asare said the Commission had completed all necessary preparations and remains committed to ensuring the process reflects the democratic will of the electorate.

“On our part as the electoral management body, we are desirous of bringing the election in the Ablekuma North constituency to a conclusion and to ensure that the constituents have a representative in Parliament,” Dr. Asare said.

The rerun follows the Electoral Commission’s decision to annul results in 19 polling stations after security-related disruptions prevented the collation of final results during the December 2024 general election. The EC said the rerun was a necessary step to restore electoral integrity in the constituency.

Friday’s vote will see the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie face off once again against the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn in a high-stakes contest to determine who will represent Ablekuma North in Parliament.

While the NPP leadership has rejected the rerun and officially withdrawn from the race, its candidate, Ms. Afriyie, has opted to defy the party’s position and continue her campaign independently.

Reiterating the Commission’s legal mandate, Dr. Asare said a clear process had been outlined to finalize collation and certify results in accordance with electoral law. “We have thus provided a path to complete the collation process while ensuring that the residents of Ablekuma North have a representative in Parliament,” he said.

The EC also extended well-wishes to the candidates, reaffirming its neutrality and professionalism. “We assure the public and the political parties that, as always, we will live by our motto and ensure that the rerun is fair, transparent and credible,” Dr. Asare concluded.
