Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama said his response to an alleged assault involving police officers is focused on accountability rather than financial compensation, underscoring concerns about public trust in state institutions.
Mr. Mahama spoke Thursday following a meeting with the Police Management Board in Accra, where officials are reviewing claims tied to members of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Task Force, commonly associated with the “Black Maria” patrol operations.
“We are not looking for compensation,” Mr. Mahama told reporters. “It’s not about money. It’s about justice.”
The artist said the engagement with authorities was intended to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. He added that transparency in the process would be critical to maintaining confidence in law enforcement.
Mr. Mahama framed the case as part of a broader issue facing Ghana’s democracy, arguing that credible investigations into alleged abuses are essential to assuring citizens that their grievances will be taken seriously.
“When incidents like this occur, people need to know there is a system that will listen and act,” he said.
