Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has formed a special investigative team to probe deaths linked to the 2020 and 2024 elections, following a directive from former President John Dramani Mahama.

The team, which will be based at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, will be led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe and consists of experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service. The team has been given specific timelines to complete their investigation and report back to the IGP.

The move is part of an ongoing effort by Dr. Dampare, who since taking office in 2021 has focused on addressing unresolved cases, including those related to election violence. One key initiative has been the establishment of the Cold Case Unit, which has made significant progress in investigating election-related deaths, including some from the 2020 elections. Several suspects have already been prosecuted in connection with the incidents.

In a letter dated January 10, 2025, President Mahama called for a thorough investigation into deaths linked to both the 2020 and 2024 elections.
